A short guide for applying serums

BY SEEN BEAUTY TEAM

Serum is the one product catering to a whole host of complexion concerns. Their formulations are highly concentrated, but they are also lightweight and penetrate skin very fast, which allows easy layering if you need it.

Even though applying a serum may sound simple, it can be tricky to know how to get the most out of it, especially with social media promoting trends that are mostly providing hands with expensive treatments that should be reaching your face. So, let’s make sure you are doing it right!

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY SERUM?

In terms of when to apply your serum in your skincare routine, it should be applied after cleansing and before moisturizing. You want the serum to be absorbed by the skin, so wait for it to dry for a few seconds (no more than one minute) before applying your favorite cream.

If we’re talking about the time of day, serums that contain antioxidants should be applied in the morning so they can help protect your skin throughout the day, while products with retinol or exfoliating acids (think glycolic, lactic, or salicylic) are best suited to nighttime use as they can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Hydrating serums can be used both in the morning and evening.

Pssst! For our Seen Beauty serums, we use special icons to help you figure when to use the product: Sun for morning and Moonfor evening. When the symbols are placed together, you can use the product both times of the day or you can choose between the two.

HOW TO APPLY IT?

There are a few ways to apply your serum according to formulation/texture and all you have to do is pick the one that suits your product the most.

For most serums, the simplest way would be to take 3-6 drops on the palms of your hands and use just one motion to transfer the product to the other hand too. The amount of serum you use will vary depending on the consistency of the formula and all you need to do is experience with the product to see how much your skin needs without it getting soaked. Avoid touching the pipette on your skin as this can encourage acne-causing bacteria. There’s no need to rub the serum into both hands as this just means all of that skin goodness is going to your palms and not your face. You also do not need to warm up the product unless it clearly states this on the packaging. Then, gently press the serum into your cheeks, forehead and chin. Don’t forget about the neck area, please!

To apply a watery serum, you can always put a few drops directly on your face if you prefer it and pat it in using an upward motion.

If you’re using a retinoid serum, you might want to be a little more targeted in your application by focusing on areas you’d like to address and avoiding the eyes, lips and nose corners. You can even use your fingers for this – just put a pea-size amount for every section and pat it gently.

Now that you have a better understanding of how to use face serums, go ahead and get your hands on one of our star formulas – or all of them!
